Question:

Can you make a bathroom vanity out of a craftsman tool box?

We are building a new house and I am fighting with my husband about the kids bathroom. I want to use a tool box for the vanity so that htey have all the drawers for earrings and make up. I think it sounds cool I want to put the sink sitting on top but do not know how to do this with the pipes and not lose drawer space Any Ideas would be great

Answer:

im sure there are less complicated and expensive ways of doing this..but im sure anything is possible
You would need to shorten the drawers so you can either run the drain down to the floor or only shorten the top few drawers, down far enough to get the plumbing out the back wall. You should do this. It would be fun for the kids, great storage and one of akind...
That sounds pretty neat, but if you used a reg. style sink bowl that might hinder the use of the storage capacity...They have floating sinks that sit on top....Or maybe I would check out the available sinks out there and see if you can mount the plumbing some other way. Or use a shorter tool box and mount the sink on a false top, if that can be done. If that makes sense.
It might be hard to get the plumbing to run down it, because of all the drawers going all the way back, and you would lose at least 6-8 inches from the top in drawers because of the sink. The concept is a good one. Drawers are wayyyyyy better than doors and much easier to organize. When we did our kitchen a few years back, we put drawers on over half the bottom cabinets. If I could do it over, it would be all drawers, because they are sooo much easier to keep organized. We are building a vanity right now with a similar concept. Drawers for vanities can be made so they leave room for the pipes in back, the drawers are just a few inches shorter in depth than the countertop. But you will still lose a little space for the sink, which is why there are false fronts up top in most of them. The good news is that most of them are less expensive than the Craftsman toolboxes, custom cabinetry isn't very expensive, just takes a little more time to make, and the drawers won't rust like metal tool chests would (when the kids put wet toothbrushes and stuff in the drawers.)
I have a friend who has done this already, He bought one of the toolboxes with a side cabinet and mounted the sink on that part of the box and then put the custom top overall of it. Then you have all your main drawers for storage. He did it in a bathroom off of his garage. It was really cool and looked great.
