Question:

Candles Or Ceramics??

I‘m looking in to starting my own business .Ive done ceramics but i like candles.I want to make candles cause i think it would be easy to make and cheaper. And if i had enough money i would make ceramics but its hard to find a cheap kiln for the money i have .

Answer:

I was in the ceramic business for 20 years. It is definitely not a quick and easy hobby. The supplies have gone up tremendously and you have to have a kiln or access to one. The main reason I quit the business is the importsthey are cheap and now they look really good. Candles are much easier and quicker. But the market is loaded with them also. Either one you choose you need to find a unique way to do them. You will have to stand out.
They are a ok tirenot greatand they are made by child laborpossibly child slave labor.do some research on the web.type in child labor kumo china.koreaetc
nothing will be easy and fast. Whatever makes money in the long run will require a lot of work and dedication from you. But you are right, candle making requires less training and initial startup money. But I would think they only sell well in winter. Look around on art fairs and talk to sellers of both about their experience. Do some market research before you get started.
I think you answered your own question.candle making is easy and fast.sigh.and i suppose because the selling price is cheap and they smell nice.candles will bring more money. But I think they need to be very unique. Have you considered using alternate materials for your sculptural work.move away from ceramics but use a self hardening clay or polymer? You could do small scale things.jewelry, etc. I am just throwing out an idea.not sure what type of ceramics you do. Maybe you could make plaster molds for ceramic hobbiests and children?
