Question:

carpet smell?

I am renting this house and the carpet smells. I don't know why...it's not dog or cat urine or anything like that. Do the synthetic fibers the carpet are made out of or the cushion under the carpet cause this odor...it really builds up if you are out of the house for a day or two...and what can one do to fix this...shampooing didn't work

Answer:

Since you shampooed the carpet, the smell might be in the pad under the carpet. If it was urine, you can go to a pet store and buy a solution which breaks down the urine. Getting smell out of the pad it difficult. You may want to get an ionizer to see if that helps........
Get some enzyme solution from your local janitorial supply and use as directed.
I have read somewhere that should put bicarbonate of soda powder down, leave it for an hour and the hover it up. The powder should absorb any smells. Apparently it is wonderful stuff apart from baking it can be used in all manner of ways for cleaning. Good luck on getting it sorted
you should of shampoo the carpet with vinager that would of took the smell away vinager takes away odors of every kind.i guess you can get a spray bottle and mix half vinager half water and spray the carpet and let dry you might have to do it a couple if times but i bet you get the odor to be gone 85 percent unless you still have the shampoo carpet cleaner that would work alot better if you used that just add vinager instead of the cleaner.
If you are renting the property I'd get in touch with the landlord and tell them about the smell. Ask if they'd be willing to pay for a company to come in with one of those industrial carpet cleaners. The problem with cleaning the carpet yourself is that shampoo only cleans the carpet, it doesn't get right down to the underlay which is where your problem could be. You may be able to cheaply hire an industrial cleaner for a weekend and blitz the place yourself if your landlord isn't willing to foot the bill.
