Question:

Carpet stain in new apartment?

I have never in my life had a fireplace before, so we were lighting the pilot light on a gas fireplace in an apartment we just got the keys to today. Some black soot type stuff got onto the carpet so I (stupidly) proceeded to spray it with carpet cleaner and blot it! It spread everywhere, and now I don't know what to do. What can I use to get ground-in soot out of off white carpet? Thank you!

Answer:

I had the same thing happen with cream colored nylon carpet and used Awesome cleaner from the Dollar store and an extractor. Awesome is an amber colored fluid that comes in a spray bottle, and the extractor is Bissell Little Green Clean Machine. Worked perfectly. Having a white carpet is a challenge.
Awesome is great, but I have used Dawn and warm water and had good result also.
carpet stains can be removed with a paste of 2 tablespoons white distilled vinegar and 1/4 cup salt or baking soda. Rub into the carpet stain and let dry. Vacuum up the residue the next day. White distilled vinegar is a popular household cleanser, effective for killing most mold, bacteria, and germs, due to its level of acidity.
