Question:

cats and plastic?

My cat likes to eat plastic grocery bags and anything that makes a krinkle noise........WHY?

Answer:

Don't worry - he won't be doing it much longer. Those plastic bags will choke him if you don't stop it now. Be more responsible ! I once witnessed a cat choke to death and it's an experience I will never forget as long as I live. Don't go through that.
I think it's because it sounds like bones crunching and since they don't get to hunt outside, plastic bags are the next best thing. Mine don't EAT plastic bags, but one of mine insists on licking the plastic that covers the toilet paper every single day. Weird....
Hehe, Wolftrak, I have the SAME PROBLEM! My little orange tabby, Stewart, is obsessed with plastic bags. He doesn't try to eat them, he'll just lick them for eternity. Sometimes, cats, like all animals, seem to develop a fixation on something like this. I've seen dogs that were batty for rocks. Our cats like plastic bags. Unfortunately, I have yet to be able to figure out a way to get him to stop this odd behavior, so I just have to be very diligent about keeping all plastics in high up places he can't get to. He seems to do it more when he's hungry or upset, and the smooth crinkly plastic might soothe him or make him think he's eating something when he's really not. Kind of like a kitty pacifier! I find that distracting him with noises or attention seems to stave him off the stuff for a while. Just try petting him or giving him treats or food if he hasn't been fed yet when it happens. Sorry if I'm not much help....but at least you're not alone! Maybe my cat and your cat should hook up, they got a lot in common. ^^()
This is a more difficult behavior to explain, and some cats are more prone to it than others. Most feline behaviorists have come to believe that some cats find a slight odor to the plastic and/or film surfaces simply irresistible, and also that the coolness and texture of the plastic and/or film must feel and taste good on the cat's tongue. It may also be another form of trying to nurse - sort of a feline oral compulsive behavior.
It has nothing to do with noise or bones it is a stomach thing like when a cat eats grass and throws up it is the same thing. there instinct tells them that they have a tummy ache and if they cant get to grass they will do it with plastic. It should be stopped as soon as possible the kitty could choke to death.
