I have a Heil sp80 with no instruction manual (came with previously owned house). My initial thought is that some kind of igniter is not working properly. I read on a forum to try cleaning the quot;flame sensorquot;. I unfortunately have no idea what that looks like or where it is located or even if that is even sound advice.I would *really* like to do this myself if possible. (tight budget)
In the burner area you will see a metal rod with ceramic and a wire connected to it. This is the flame sensor. It sticks directly into the flame and acts as a rectifier for a DC milliamp current to ground. When that current is present, the control board knows that the flame did indeed ignite and will then allow the indoor blower motor to start after the heat exchanger warms up. If the ceramic cracks or dirt accumulates on the sensor, it will not provide the current and your system will attempt to start again. Typically, after 3 tries the unit will lock out the ignition process and turn the blower on continuosly. A flame sensor is not something you will be able to buy just anywhere. You'll most likely have to get it from an hvac supply house such as Johnstone Supply, United Refrigeration, CC Dickson, RE Michels, Mingledorf's, etc. Usually only licensed contractors can purchase from those suppliers. Unfortunately, you will need to have a qualified hvac technician determine what is preventing the flame from catching. It could be a bad ignitor, a bad flame sensor, a failed control board, even a failed gas valve. Sorry I don't have better news for you.
try this, the flame sensor is located right in front of one of the burners. it's a metal piece about 1/8 diameter with one wire attached to it. clean it off with some fine sandpaper. it could also be your pressure switch. it's about a 3 diameter diaphragm with two wires attached to the back of it and a hose going into the fire box on the front of it. pull the hose off of the switch and blow through it to make sure it's not obstructed. reattach the hose and pull the other end out of the fire box. suck lightly on it and listen for the switch to make a clicking sound. if either of these are malfunctioning it will cause your furnace to go into a safety lockout. i.e. the blower blows but there's no heat. make sure you turn the power off first.
It may be the thermal coupling. That is the heat sensor by the pilot light that lets it know that the pilot is lit. If the pilot light is not on then it will not release gas for the burners, therefore you have a blower going with no heat. This is about the most inexpensive part on the machine and relatively the most simple to change out.
