Question:

Ceramic or porcelain tile? ?

I want to lay tile on a house I just bought. What is the difference between ceramic and porcelain tile and which one would be the best fit for my house? The tile is going to be in the living room, dinning room, and kitchen. Also, how much is it going to cost me for labor to lay down the tile? Total square feet is going to be around 600 sq ft.

Answer:

Go to retail tile stores and they will show you the differences, and tell you which is better and why. It would take an hour to type basic information in here. Try using Google and search the topic. There is a tonne of information out there.
I okorder /... As far as how much it will cost to install you will need to go to home depot or lowes and get an estimate. Call around locally or ask any neighbors that have had tile installed.
Tile terminology can be confusing. Most types of tiles that are made from clay or a mixture of clay and other materials, then kiln-fired, are considered to be a part of the larger classification called “Ceramic Tiles”. These tiles can be split into two groups, porcelain tiles and non-porcelain tiles. These non-porcelain tiles are frequently referred to as ceramic tiles by themselves, separate from porcelain tiles. For more information visit the link which is given below
Both can be equally good or bad. Porcelain is usually a harder bodied tile than a ceramic. Overall you ll get a more consistent sizing w/ porcelains. Most all porcelains now are a glazed porcelain as opposed to the real good color thru out bodied porcelains. You ll have to see a tile to fully under stand the difference. What you need to do is compare apples to apples as far as the ratings(0-4). Using a 3/4 rated tile only in the house. This is a slip resistance rating. Then there is tinsel strength ( breakage) . And last is ohms or scratch resistance. Get the fact sand do some comparison shopping. As far as the labor, it can run from3-5$ a s/f depending on the area you live in. This won t include setting materials ( thin sets , grouts, cement board if needed) These are taxable items and each jobs vary as you may or may not need the cement board if your on a slab floor for example. The colour goes through porceline tile and not ceramic. I have both kinds in my home. I paid $3.50 a square foot to have mine installed by the flooring store I purchased them from. This way you get a guarantee if they are done by their installers. I am in Ontario Canada, and had mine done last summer. My concern (as I have them at my entrance way) was how slippery they were when wet. Keep that in mind if you will be placing them at an entrance. (we have rainy and snowy weather here). Solid colours will show everything...dark shows dust and hair...light shows dirt and hair (we have animals). I have infloor heating under mine but if you do not, they will be cold on your feet...something else to think about.
