Question:

Check engine light comes on occasionaly?

I just bought a 92 mazda mx3 gs manual and the check engine light pops on then off every now and then while I‘m driving it. What could be causing this?

Answer:

There is a code being tripped by something under the hood that is doing that and then correcting itself for a bit. If the car's running okay otherwise, I've found the most common thing that does this is an 02 sensor. Since they rely on a 'count' system that has to agree with the 'count' produced by the next 02 sensor inline, then the code trips and then when you're driving they tend to 'agree' with each other later. I have a couple of vehicles that do this and even after changing the sensors I still get an intermittent light that comes on. If you want to verify that there is a code tripped, you can have your checked for free at those discount auto parts places. They'll let you know what the code says if it is still in the computer on your car.
Take it to your local auto parts store, like an Auto Zone or something similar. There is a handheld computer they can plug into your car and it will diagnose the reason why the check engine light is coming on. It should be free. Then, at least you will know.
