Question:

Clogged bathroom sink?! Please help!!?

I've got a badly clogged bathroom sink. I took out the draiin cover and I can see where the water is just standing/ draining extremely slowly. I can't reach the clog, but I was able to get a wire coat hanger into it and pull out a small bit of hair (not sure how hair even got into the sink!) but it didn't do anything to speed the draning. There could be a small bit of gravel in the drain from a few months ago as well as some bits of paper (all on accident, I'd never put anything down there!). I already tried some baking soda and vinegar but it didnt help, the vinegar just made the water level raise. The water is maybe 6 or 7 inches from the drain (not in the sink, in the pipe). What should I do? Thanks for your help :)

Answer:

Stop screwing around. Follow these steps: - Go to the ATM and withdraw $50 - Go to the hardware store and buy a drain snake (any decent hardware guy will point one out to you). You don't need top of the line, 25' long is plenty and it shouldn't cost too much. - While at the store pick up a decent pair of pliers. I like Channellock but any pliers about 10-12 should do the trick. - Get some rubber gloves. You'll want them. - A can of WD-40 - Go home and get under the sink. - There are a couple of nuts holding the pipes together. Loosen the ones that hold the U-shaped pipe on. NOTE: have a bowl or bucket underneath! NOTE: the large chrome nuts holding the big drain pipes! They'll be chrome or white plastic. - Run the snake up through the pipe toward the sink. turn and push. Pull it back and remove any gunk. - Run the snake through the pipe going into the wall or down through the floor. Turn and push. If it starts to get hard to turn, pull it back and remove any gunk. Go back in and repeat until you don't encounter any more difficulties. If it becomes hard to push, that may be a turn in the pipe - keep trying. - When you cannot advance any further or have inserted the entire length of the snake, but not brought back any new gunk, you're done. Job's finished. It cost you, at the outside, $50. You will NOT find a plumber that will do the job for less, and when it's over you own the tools, so the next time this happens the fix costs you nothing. Shoot WD-40 on the snake as you wind it up, and shoot more inside the can it winds up inside of. That'll keep it in good shape until next time. Good luck with it.
well that will teach you for masterbating in the sink
get some lye (NaOH) from the diy store. preferrably pallets. let it sink (no pun intended) to the bottom (best with boiling water but if its already full it cant). and let it sit out for a day. if that doesnt work a plumber should come
The clog is, most likely, in the p-trap. If you look under the sink, it's the pipe is shaped like a U. A coat hanger won't make the bend, to reach most of the clog. So, if you don't feel that taking it off yourself is possible, they (hardware, home depot stores) carry plastic drain snakes. Designed exactly for the problem you have. Be careful, wear goggles,& good luck.
I have a cheaper solution. Remove everything from underneath the sink. Remove the thing that you open and close to let water in and out of sink (don't know the name of it). Put a towel and bowl underneath the pipe. Get something long and narrow to push the hair down the drain, such as a wooden spoon. Turn off the water (hot and cold handles under the sink). Mark how the pipes are aligned so they will be replaced properly later. Unscrew the U-shaped pipe over the bowl and set the pipe aside. Stand above the sink and push the hair down into the bowl until the drain is clear. It will stink. Replace everything and turn the water back on.
