Question:

Cold air intake differences?

I recently installed an aftermarket cold air intake on my 2004 mazda 3.0 v6.and somehow I feel like it got slower and some delay when I step on a gas pedalCould it be right or is possible?Thank you all in advance.

Answer:

A cold air intake is pretty much an excuse to move your air sensor if it's located on your air filter box so you can toss the filter box and add something that breathes better. The temp of the air is only an issue if the temp of your car is an issue and chances are you never driver it that hard. I owned a mustang that had the air intake sensor on the hose so all I had to do was by a KN air filter for $40 and strap that to the hose. Adding a high flow muffler and the thing could breath a lot better. I was able to hold gears longer, I was doing 60 in 2nd gear with little complaint from the engine. I've never done it with an auto before vs a stick but if it really impacted the gearing then your computer might be shifting too soon.
Depending on what kind of filter you have. Most car's will have the SES light up if your MAF sensor is pretty dirty. This is caused by improper installation of your intake, or a dirty air filter and sometime even cause by oiled air filter, in which cases like the KN intake filters which uses a specific oil treatment for the filter. First simple thing you can do, check your intake pipe, un installing (optional), make sure everything is DRY, make sure the air sensor ( IAT ) is connected properly, and plugged into the IAT sensor area that customized to fit your air sensor clip. Then check for any un-tightened calipers screw that NEEDs to be tightened to the MAF, Pipe, Filter, etc. Things like this can causes your car to not gain torque/speed and even burn up your fuel faster, when equiped with aftermarket intake kits.
The problem with the cold air intakes sold is that they are not cold air intakes They are short ram intakes If you remove the old air box which usually has an air inlet off the interior fender and replace it with a 4 in cone filter and a tube the air being drawn into the motor is the warm air off the motor a true cold air intake draws air from a duct inlet near the bottom front of the car so yeah if the car is sucking up 150F air it isnt as dense and compressed as say 75F so it has less air volume per unit of air less air less power.
