Question:

cold air intake on 2007 Camry?

I have a 2.4l 4 cylinder camry le and wondering if putting a ram or cold air intake is a decent idea to make my slow *** car a bit faster and more fuel efficient. The car is a hand me down and is valuble so extensive mods and selling the car arnt going to happen. The intakes look easy to put in and look easy enough for me to install. Is the intake going to make my car loud? I found a good looking KN intake online and claims to increase horsepower by 15. Is that bullshit? The stock airbox and the spot the intake would be installed in are kinda close to the engine and i believe would take in warm air. Ive also heard that intakes put extra wear on the engine the car has 120000 miles on it and im wondering if that has a factor. All answers are greatly appreciated thanks

Answer:

DON'T. You MUST use the same speed rating and load rating as specified by the manufacturer. Passenger tires have different sidewall construction and aren't designed to behave like truck tires. You are playing with fire here and people could die as a result. Don't second guess the manufacturer just to save a few bucks.
A Cold Air Intake CAN improve both fuel economy and can increase HP by 15. -- BUT -- a cold air intake is not good for your car - untuned. You need to get it tuned properly for your ECU to know that it has a new denser air coming into the engine. If you don't get it tuned, you could be setting the timer for your engine to fail because it will make you run lean - meaning that your engine will put too little gas into the cylinders thus causing your engine to run hotter than usual.
The Tacoma uses Passenger Metric sized tires.
RE: Would it make a difference if I used passenger tires on my tacoma then light truck tires? The ones I want to purchase are the same size as my current tires. The difference is that the current ones are light truck tires and the tires I want to purchase are categorized as passenger tires.
The best air intake for your car is the one that was designed for your car by the manufacturer. After market cold air intakes are nothing but a scam. They do absolutely nothing positive for your car except make it sound different. Cold air intakes don't work because your fuel and air mixture is controlled by the car computer and any change to the stock intake will result in problems with your engine sensors. The computer will see any change to the intake as a problem to correct by attempting to adjust the fuel / air mixture to the original factory settings that it was programmed to maintain.
