Question:

Cold Air Intake on a 91 CRX Si?

I am looking into installing a cold air intake once I get my ‘91 Honda Civic CRX Si. I have a few questions about it though:I would like to do the install myself, but I know almost nothing about car mechanics. How hard is it to install? How much would a good Intake cost? what are some respectable brands to look into? And how much does the HP and gas mileage go up after installing an intake on a civic? Thanks for any help you can give.

Answer:

I had a '90 CRX Si with a ZC swap. The only other mods were an aluminum flywheel and kevlar clutch. I also had an '88 CRX Si that was all stock. I did better than a cold air intake and made my own RAM AIR intake using the stock air box and a drop in KN filter. I did notice an increase in power. At least 5 horsepower. It was most notable at high rpm though. I could hear a slight wining like the way a turbo sounds. Ram air gives about 1 psi of boost at 65mph and about 2 psi at 100mph. Installing an aftermarket CAI is very easy and pretty straightforward. A good CAI will set you back at least around $200 and give you a 7%-8%increase in power. It depends on how restrictive the stock set up is. All you're doing is freeing up power that is already there. AEM, KN, and Iceman are probably the best brands. Gas mileage won't improve much. MAYBE 1 mpg if you granny it. No different than a drop in high flow filter. A CAI is definitely one of the best bang for the buck upgrade for any car. Mild power upgrades should always be in this order. 1. intake 2. exhaust 3. throttle body 4. injectors Good luck.
How hard is it to install? Takes less than five minutes. You just replace your stock cold air intake, with an aftermarket one. Totally pointless. How much would a good Intake cost? A $5 one, and a $200 one will do about the same. Basically nothing. what are some respectable brands to look into? People will swear by KN, AEM, Greddy, etc. But they all do the same thing. And how much does the HP and gas mileage go up after installing an intake on a civic? Approximately zero. At best, you may gain 1-2 horsepower on your top end, but you'll lose 1-2 horsepower from your low end. And since your low end band is where you acceleratethe car WILL be slower. And you'll want to experience the extra power you just got, so you'll drive harder. Which will cause you to lose mpg.
I prefer to just steal them from all the blacksmiths when it#x27;s night lol
