Question:

Cold air intake on gravel?

I wanna get a cold air intake for my 99 chevy silverado 5.3 but I live on a gravel road. Can i use the box that‘s on the factory intake to cover the filter? do they sell boxes for aftermarket intakes?

Answer:

If cold air made such a difference, we would all notice that our cars were twice as powerful in the winter! It's BS, and some cars have the box positioned to get colder air than the cold air intake will get from right behind the radiator. LIke a hole at the bottom of the box that finds cold air below the radiator or from the wheel well. Some aftermarket intakes foul the MAF sensor. Then you must regularly spray the sensor wires in the MAF with MAF cleaner.
wow! so many arguments against any cold air intake but no one hits it. fact of the matter is that colder air is more dense, it will have more o2 available in a given volume of air. match that up with the correct mixture of fuel and what do you get? more a more powerful explosion exerting force on the face of the piston. this is how power is increased. look at the ram air GTOs from the 60s and early 70s. the 69 judge was set up for that ide and could create the horses.
Yes. The fittings have to be copper, and you need a powered crimping tool.
You really don't need a box around it. The aftermarket filters have oil catchers that are little metal wires above the filter its self. and if its a real COLD air intake it comes with a heat protector that is basically a box all around the filter . So even if a rock was to fly up it would have to brake the metal and somehow make it through the filter to get in the intake its self. You can most likely use the stock filter box on the pipe if it fits but the hole point in a aftermarket intake it to allow more air flow into the engine. Some people don't even put a filter over there pipe just a sock for maximum air flow but don't do that it's silly and looks bad. You should be alright. Don't listin to people that say a aftermarket intake is worse than stock. There would be no reason to make aftermarket parts if everything stock was better. The aftermarket intake allows the engine to breath more than a stock intake. and that has been proven in dyno tests MANY times. Anyone that says stock is better when it comes to air intakes. is no where close to being a tuner. Not only does it allow you to have better air flow. The more aftermarket parts that are better than stock Headers, exhaust, intake. It all adds up to better performance. Tho you wont see a difference in performance with just an intake add the header and full exhaust and your ride will run a little better
