Question:

curtains on the wall?

My boyfriend and I are moving into a cute little apartment this summer. Its very plain though, so i was looking to add a little "oomph" with placing curtains on the wall behind our bed. I was something lightweight and flowy. The only problem is that I cant find cute affordable curtains that are long enough, does anyone have any suggestions. Or if you have suggestions on how to hang them up, that would be great. Thanks

Answer:

There should be piles of curtains everywhere, just ask. As far as hanging them on the wall you don't say what size the bed is. Just buy regular curtain rods, put up two if you need so you can swag them back and hook them. Put a pretty poster or picture in the center. I bought some cheap fabric at a fabric store, cut it and did not sew anything I just wrapped it around some bamboo my husband and I went and cut down. We used the white closet hangers to put the bamboo, or wood stained, in. Then above it we built a 12 shelf all around that wall, it's an actual old house with a whole wall that is a bay window w/ 3 full length windows, like 96 to the floor. I use vinyl blinds. The window treatment has passed muster with a lot of my uppity friends. LOL
JC Penney has lots of drapes in long sizes. Depending on if you are allowed to put screws in the wall, you could use those drapery holders (that look almost like doorknobs) something in a tab top drape would work best for that. Or you could use a heavy duty velcro on whatever fabric you might find, whether its a light weight curtain, sheet or fabric.
Ikea has the best (and longest) curtains, and plenty of flowy materials as well. They also have great hardware no matter whether they are going on a wall, over a window, or across a room. They're not expensive, but they're not always dirt cheap either. But I would definitely check it out - if there's one in your area, best to go there in person. If not, check it out onlilne.
Get two scones with holes so you can pass the fabric through it. Space and fix them on the wall according to the size of your bed. Buy some inexpensive sheer kind of fabric that would be soft and can pass through the holes. There is no stitching involved here. You just have to hang the fabric in an imaginative way or just plain old style of a semi circle in the center and the two sides falling. An Indian Saree would be good too. And wallah!!! you not only get the curtains but also a good head board for your bed.
If you can't find what you like in curtains, consider bed sheets. Look at Thrift stores, Garage Sales, and other discount stores. Find curtain rods their too. You can just staple it to the wall, and cover it with crown molding, or some other decoration. They're making cute fringes now. Get them at craft stores. Craft stores have all sorts of finishings in the furniture department. Also, the garage sales and thrift stores will have all sorts of things for you to re-purpose. Use your imagination.
