its like a big power box the has two metal prongs, and is about 2quot;X3big and fits into the same size slot, if you push it in it gets power for a second then doesnt if you jiggle it around it gets power for a second and doenst.anyone know please?

You will need to rest by unplugging Power Box, waiting about one minute, then plug power box back into printer. Then unplug power cord form wall outlet, wait one minute, and plug printer back in to wall outlet. This should solve your problem.
I take it you are inserting it the right way up, and can only think the plug needs to be bolted in. Look for 2 small bolts, and holes they will fit through. Something that big may need that, as it could shake out otherwise. There may be something that prevents you plugging in when the power is on. If all else fails read the instructions or contact Dell. I could come and help in return for a few favours.
Dell power cords are notorious for crapping out. They overheat, they have poor solder connections, the pins on the connectors fail. The only thing you can do is try to determine which side has the problem and order a replacement. Yes, they sell the damned things seperate! I had some success for a while by finding THE SPOT where it stayed powered up and taped the Shite out of it. Good luck friend. I have 3 Dell laptops with the same type of power cord, I've had to replace all three at one time or another.
