if you want to be real ghetto, get an empty toilet paper roll, cut a hole in the center big enough to fit some aluminum foil for a bowl light it with your hand on one side and your mouth on the other. orrr you could use an empty water bottle or a soda can.
If the cables are good and grounded to the earth then there is a less of a chance of lighting hitting the house than with no lighting rod system in place. Lighting is not completely understood by scientist so unfortunately there is no safe answer here whether your house will ever get hit by lighting or not.
