Question:

Disappointed with my first widescreen LCD monitor purchase?

First off, i'm not familiar with the technical terms so please bear with meI just bought a samsung LCD monitor (15.6 inch), widescreen (rectangular, like cinemas).I'm disappointed with it because my old monitor seems nicer. The old one is a fat, heavy, SQUARE monitor, unlike my new LCD which is rectangular. But more than that, here's a couple of my complaints:1. Everything seems to be stretched horizontally, from desktop icons to movies. My old square monitor wasn't like that. Anyway to adjust that? I don't think it's supposed to be like that.2. Movies definitely look better on my old monitor, not just because they don't look stretched, but also because the image seems sharper somehow. If there's anyway to improve the quality, please tell me.Thanks so much!

Answer:

You have the resolution set wrong. I'm not sure what the correct resolution should be but it would state these numbers in the manual that came with the monitor. If you computer does not have the correct resolution setting, run the disk that came with the monitor, and then reset the resolution. That should fix the problem.
The fuzzy stretched issue is easy to fix: you need to adjust your screen resolution in the display properties. Probably you should set it to 1280 * 800 In XP, right click the desktop background and select Properties and then go to Display settings. In Vista or Windows 7 right click the desktop background and select Screen Resolution
You should make sure that you have the video card driver installed on your computer. Also, to fix the stretching problem, right click on the desktop and go to properties or change resolution and change it until it looks better.
1. Right click on your desktop, then click properties. 2. Click on the Settings tab, it will show a diagram of your monitor. 3. Slide the Screen Resolution to one of the shapes that resembles the dimensions of your monitor, click apply 4. If you're happy with the resolution, keep it. If not, try a larger or smaller resolution.
There are 2 issues regarding widescreen LCDs that you need to be aware of if you are switching from a CRT tube monitor. 1) First is that you are switching from a 4:3 ratio display to a 16:10 ratio display, so you need to change your computer's display ratio as well. For example, if your CRT display was previously set to 1280 x 960, then to get a proper widescreen display, change it to 1280 x 800. Otherwise, the picture has to be squeezed to fit the lesser height, which makes the picture look stretched horizontally. 2) The other issue is that unlike a CRT that can be set to any (4:3) resolution and the monitor will render that resolution and give you crisp clear picture, LCDs can't do that. A fault of LCDs is that they have to be built with a default native resolution. LCDs can simulate other resolutions, but it will give you a blurry picture. So it's best to set your computer's display to the monitor's native resolution. Check your monitor's specs for the native resolution, but typically a 15 display would be 1280 x 800. One other thing. If your computer previously came with a CRT monitor, I'm guessing this is a really older computer. If it's so old the graphics adapter may not even be able to render widescreen display resolutions. If that's the case, then when you try to set your display resolution, it won't give you the widescreen resolutions, like 1280x800. If that's the case, then the only way you can get a widescreen display, so your display isn't distorted, is to get a new graphics card.
