The answer is real simple...you can't get them clean and deodorized without using a shampooer or any kind of electric carpet cleaner I was a cleaning professional for over a decade so you can either take my word for it, or start wearing a clothes pin on your nose all the time you're home. And it's very likely the rinky-dink carpet cleaners you rent won't work either, but you could try one before calling in professional carpet cleaners who use heavy-duty machines to clean carpets with. I would have to say with great difficulty, I would even go as far as saying it is best to take the carpet up and clean under it as well. Place water onto a carpet with dirt and stains and it just soaks through to the bottom. Placing perfumes and scented products down do not get rid of the smells they just mask them. However your question asked for alternative methods without a shampooer so the only other alternative I could think of would be to use a steamer on it like a Polti. The steam actually lifts the dirt to the surface so you can then wipe it with a damp cloth. The temperature of the steam also kills any small bugs and germs.
