Question:

do Americans use the word "sofa" , as in a chair? ?

As in a chair which you sit on in the main room in your house. In the UK we call it a sofa. And the main public room is called a living room. What's it in the States? Thanks in advance!

Answer:

Blimey! A chair is a chair. A chair is not a sofa. A sofa is a couch. And the main room is the living room. Shag is a type of carpet.
When I hear the word sofa I think of a couch. I never say sofa though. The main public room where the couch is located is called the living room.
Sofa would be similar to a couch here. Chair would be easy chair, La-Z-Boy or the like. Living room here can be various things. It can be the front room for entertaining guests or the room the family gathers in to watch TV etc. But that can also be the TV room, family room or den. Depends on the part of the country you are in and the local vernacular.
