Question:

Do fence posts need to be cemented into the ground?

Erecting a PT wood fence.Do the posts need to be cemented in?

Answer:

There are Plastic Parts that a [4 x 4] will slip into/.. I would use Cement to anchor that..being sure you don't squeeze the dimension inwards..so a [4 x 4] might not fit anymore-- Then you use Sheet Metal Screws to bolt the [4 x 4] into the Plastic Housing..2-screws.. === If your NOT useing a [4 x 4] size.. There are other types of Plastic..usually round stock../ You can lay-in all your Footings for the fence..apply the wood..screw them down/that way you can UN-Screw the wood for a repair.. ..and alot of wood will ROT--if you sink it in cement.. Most times the wood is mounted on-top of a cement..BLOCK/not buried/ === Hope that helps..//watch THIS OLD HOUSE..they do alot of home stuff.
Always use cement.....on a 4-7 ft fence, put 1 foot of the post underground in cement. For the gate posts which need more strength put a foot and a half to 2 feet underground in cement. There are 60 lb bags which are designed for posts, sacrete rapid set, put the post in, pour the bag in, level/plumb the post and add water.

You don't NEED to use cement. It is probably the better choice, but we put a 6' by 8' wooden fence up in our backyard and after we put the post in, we filled it with with the dirt that was dug up, packed down extremely tight. The fence has been up for a few years now and it's very sturdy. Never had a problem with wind or anything. I don't see why you'd want to spend money when you could easily do this. But, it's up to you...
Not always. Live in N East frost heave is a problem. Have set posts dry using crushed rock w/ good results. Just dig the postholes to required depth 3' around here to stay below frost line. Used 1-1/2 crushed rock. Throw a couple of inches of rock into hole into the hole , set the post surround it w/ rock level it up ram the stone tight around it ..done. The dry stone allows water to drain away the posts will last longer. If a post has to be replaced or moved just pull it up dig out the stone re-use it Nice thing is ,you do not have a wad of concrete to dig up. Tall fences might need deeper holes esp if there is a lot of wind load on them Would consider concrete for gate posts unless its for small gate. If dry set posts do lean from wind or frost just wiggle them back into place ram the stone again. Never had a problem. Best regards
