Question:

Do kids fall out of Toddler Beds?? What do you Think of Toddler Beds?

I know thats two questions!! lolbut I want to take my daughter out of her crib, she is 17 months and her crib was given to us and not in good condition anymore... buying another crib would be a waste. I bought a toddler bed, because we thought we were moving to a bigger place and have to stay here 4 more months... i'm not setting it up yet.I was going to wait to move to set it up, but now Im afraid she will fall off!!!and think its a total waste and want to buy a regular single bed and put bed rails on the sides for safety... what do you think??what do you think of Toddler beds???should I get her a single bed instead or use a toddler bed.... THANKS

Answer:

I never bothered with a toddler bed with either of my two boys. They were both in proper single beds at your daughter's age. I just bought some bed guards to stop them rolling out of bed. They didn't use them for long. I took them off after a few months and never used them again. They may have fallen out of bed a couple of times, but that is how they learn how to stay in a single bed! You could always put some pillows on the floor if you are worried. I personally think toddler beds are a waste of money - they won't be in them for long before they'll need a single bed so you may as well go straight for the single bed and cut out the toddler bed.
I personally don't much care for toddler beds. But I waited until my kids were over 2 before I moved them to a big bed. I do know people who moved right to a big bed with rails with young ones. Some people just get the mattress on the frame and don't put on a boxspring so to keep it lower. It is really more a matter of preference.
Yes, kids can and do fall out of toddler beds if they don't have siderails on them - same with single beds. With my little boy we went straight from a crib to twin bed with siderails on one side pushed up against the wall on the other. I just personally felt like buying a toddler bed was a waste as he was almost two when he stopped sleeping in his crib. I don't think there is really a right or wrong answer to this, it's really what you are comfortable with and what is safe for your child. If you already have a toddler bed, use it. If it's new and you can return it for a twin bed, I would because you're going to need to buy one eventually anyway. I liked the idea of the other answerer who said just put the mattress on the floor so there's not a risk of falling.
My son went from a crib to a toddler bed at 13 months and never fell out. He is now 2.5 and still sleeps in it. He will continue to sleep there for at least another year or so... until he gets too big. I would feel uncomfortable with my young child sleeping in a bed like mine so far off the ground... he is all over the place in his bed... I have no idea how he hasn't fallen out yet! Ha! Buying a toddler bed is efficient if you put your child in it soon enough... but if you wait until your child is 2-3 and then put them in a toddler bed, I can see how it might be a waste... but we love the bed he has. It also isn't a waste if you buy second hand or from yard sales (use a clean mattress though) because then you spend very little money... and we will use our toddler bed for at least 2-3 years. Good luck!
Toddler beds are nice and most of them have rails on the side so that the child will not fall out (and they are low to the ground if that were to happen), but they are not necessary at all. I prefer going straight to a twin bed and getting a rail for the side.
