Question:

Does anyone have a problem with their windshield wipers flying up when going over 100 mph?

I sometimes race at the track and I have a problem with my windshield wipers flying up at high speeds. My first impulse was simply to remove them, but I recently got a vehicle citation by the highway patrol for not having them. I am just curious if any racers (or fast drivers) have had this problem with their windshield wipes flying up when driving fast and what was done, if anything, to fix it.It obviously has something to do with wind drag.

Answer:

I have seen some cars with a small plastic device attached to each wiper. It had three tiny wings set at an angle, obviously to keep pressure on the windshield at high speed.
My wipers have a little spoiler on them (subaru standard equipment). However, on the wiper mechanism, be sure all of your grommets and washers are new to eliminate any play in them. Might help your situation and a cheap fix. On one of the cars I own the little grommets are old and I wondering wiper problems. Helps to tighten everything as well. Keep in mind that wipers are a complex system of moving parts and arms that work loose over the years.
