Does blocking off registers cause the heat to excape through the chimney? Raising your heating bill?

Answer:

My entire wardrobe consists only of lab coats supplied by the company. I go through at least 3 a week (I seem to have that effect on the female staff here, especially my receptionist). So, I can't really slip them the bill ... just something else instead, before the heat of the moment arises (handy having a pharmacy just down the hall) and then slip them something else during.
Yes, no, and possibly. When you block off a register the heat should come out more some where else. Make sure you don't block off a return register. If you block off to many registers you will loose the heat out the chimney because you don't circulate it through the house. If you block off to many registers your heat exchanger can overheat, and be damaged. If you are drawing return air from an unheated room the furnace will have to run longer to heat the cooler air. Good luck.
Nope. But it will effect the efficiency of your heater. Minor adjustment of the outputs is acceptable and usually required for comfort. In my case with a split level... In summer we almost completely shut off the output vents downstairs for the central A/C as the cold air runs down the stariwell anyway. In winter we open all of the downstairs ones 100% and dial back the vents in the upper center of the house where it is warmest anyway. We don't mess with the intakes, other than to keep the filters changed regularly for maximum air flow.
no, you are talking about a hot air system. closing one register will just direct the heated air to another register. if all registers are closed, you would just be wasting fuel because when the thermostat calls for heat it will take longer to heat up. the air used for combustion and the air use in the heat vents are not the same. more efficient units use outside air for combustion
No, it only causes the forced air to go through the remaining opened vents at a faster rate. P.S. A chimney waste more heat than it's worth, it actually sucks out nice warm air in your home straight out. You should block the opening when not in use with a non flammable cover.
