Question:

Does it matter whether I have a new roof installed or exterior painting first?

I just bought a colonial house that needs a lot of exterior work. It needs a new roof urgently, as well as all new windows, and all the upper siding needs to be painted.Does it matter which of these things I have done first, second, etc? I was thinking that when they paint, the overspray might get onto the new roof and windows if I have those things installed first. Do you think I should have the painting done first, then they won't need to cover any of the windows or roof, since they are both getting replaced?

Answer:

roof first paint second replace windows last
I would do whatever work that needs to be done and leave the paint for last.
Paint after the roof. You may experience roofing materials hitting the sides of the house after they peel the layer of tiles on the roof. Then paint w/o the chance of tiles hitting the sides of the house.
Roof, windows, then paint, just expect the painters to mask appropriately. Roof first, the roofers may need to remove some gutters to properly attach some flashing to meet current ice shield code, and they may not be able to fit it directly where they removed it. Replacing the windows will normally also require trim modifications, unless you get the cheesey finless windows that just slide into the opening, but even then the window people will be leaning ladders against the house that may mar the paint.
I'd fix the roof first so as to stop any inside water damage that has been done. Then I'd install the windows, do internal repairs, if any, and do the painting last. Professional painters won't hurt your roof or windows, and this big colonial definite needs a professional paint job, not spray painting. Papaw
