Question:

Does my hot water heater work when the power is out?

I have natural gas to heat the heater but I am wondering if it also needs electricity to run. We lost power and the water was still hot days after losing power. Was the water still hot from when we had power or does the heater still work without power?

Hello, I have 2 50-gallon state select water heaters model number gs650ybrt which are located in a guest room in one of my upstairs bedrooms. Over the weekend we lost power when we plugged in the vacuum in the same room. The room and closet (where the heaters are located) has no power. When we lost power we also lost our hot water on both floors. Both hot water heaters are not working and I'm not sure how or why the 2 are connected. So far we have Not called in electrician or a plumber and would like to know if we can troubleshoot it myself. My house do not have fuses and I checked the electrical breaker box and all switches are in on position. I'm not sure why the power went out when we plugged in the vacuum, we have used that plug several times before. My heater is 7 years old (same years as my house). Thank you and Happy New Year!
some newer high efficiency water heaters need electricity, but most dont. the easy way to know is to look at the heater. are there any electrical cords or conduits going to it? or is it just copper pipes, a gas pipe, and a sheet metal flue?
