Question:

Does the magnetic north pole line up with the geographic north pole?

Please explain to me why, as well! I have a test tomorrow and I am fairly confused with this material. Also, which magnetic pole (on the bar magnet model) matches the magnetic south pole?Thank you!

Answer:

No. The North Pole, also known as the Geographic North Pole or Terrestrial North Pole, is, subject to the caveats explained below, defined as the point in the northern hemisphere where the Earth's axis of rotation meets the Earth's surface. It should not be confused with the North Magnetic Pole. Also from pedia: The North Magnetic Pole is physically a magnetic field south pole The magnetic north pole does not actually stay in one spot on the earths surface while the geographical north pole does. So it's impossible that they be in the same spot (for very long anyway).
Using a compass, the north-pole will always face the north and south always the south. WHY? Definitely, this means that the magnetic North pole is actually in the Geographic south pole and vice versa. Both geographic and magnetic pole are not exactly at the same spot but is quite close.
