On the factory alarm, it should arm whether the top is up or down. I'm sure you're aware that it will not arm the alarm if you lock the doors manually instead of using the switch, key, or remote transmitter. But, you do have to wait for about 15 seconds for it to arm, so if you're trying before that, that could be the problem. Also, just lifting the handle may not trigger the alarm. Since the door won't open when it's locked, it could be a convenience thing that it doesn't trigger the alarm. Since many people may forget to unlock the door before lifting the handle, then their alarm would start going off on them. It may have to be opened by reaching inside to unlock it for it to trigger the alarm. Unlocking it by either key or remote will disarm the alarm, but not by reaching inside to unlock it. If it has an aftermarket alarm, that will vary by the manufacturer of the alarm and the installer who installed it.
It should and alarm is there to prevent theft!! try to open the door or shake it once!! if it don't work(be sure it is armed) it may need to be recalibrated!!!
