If the poles switch will al of our electrical equipment still work? Or will it run in revers. Will migratory animals go the wrong way?
The present THEORY of pole reversal is wrong. The magnetic poles of our planet are due to the spin of our planet. In order for the poles to be reversed, the spin of our planet would have to be reversed. The energy forming earth's magnetic fields is due to the energy of rotation increasing as one moves from either pole toward the plane of our planet's equator. These forces move opposite each other (called the Coriolis Effect) and meet at the equator. It is this force that causes winds and water to rotate in opposite directions. When these opposing forces meet at the plane of earth's equator, they are moving in opposite directions. These forces moving against each other through the plasma area of our planet generate a strong electric field. When an electric field is generated, a magnetic field always forms at right angles to the electric one. It is for this reason we have opposing negative and positive poles within our planet that exhibit magnetic forces in an exactly opposite manner.
Electrical stuff will function. The biggest danger is that during the transition, the field will have to go through zero. That means there will be no field to protect us from the solar particles in flares and the normal wind. That may cause high radiation counts at the earth's surface.
The electrical equipment will work the same way Their magnetic field is independent of that of the earth. It is believed that the migratory animals like the birds are oriented by the magnetic field of the earth. In that case it is possible that they can be affected but we cannot underrate the capabilities of living things and nature to make the necessary adjustments. The same will happen with the magnetic means of orientation used by man as the direction given by them would be reversed by 180 degrees and the necessary adjustments wil have to be made.
Of course compasses will have to be redone. It is only speculative that migratory animals will suffer, but it is likely at least some of each species will adapt or use other means for guidance. Electronic and electrical devices should be OK provided that there isn't some large electromagnetic pulse generated by the poles reversing. Even if there is, anything not damaged will work fine after the poles settle.
