Question:

Electrical Wiring Problem, I have two outlets an overhead light and a switch that will not function. ?

I have two outlets, and overhead light with a wall switch that are not functioning. The outlets when tested indicate a hot / grd reversed. The bulbs are new. The switch measures 120V at both leads when measured from the ground screw on the switch. 120V is seen at both wires if the switch is either on or off. No other outlets in the room are showing any problems. Also note this is not new wiring and everything was working fine until yesterday. What should I be looking for? What could be causing this problem?

Answer:

I assume you didn't have any work done on the electrical system before the problems started.Check the outlets first. The light switch will be fed from this circuit. When they wire a room, they catch the outlets first ,then the lights. You may have a bad outlet or corrosion on the wire at the terminal.
it looks like you have lost the return connection on the light fixture which is a white wire check your fixture, connection.
What was done yesterday? That is where you start looking for the problem. The switch tells us one circuit is in the wrong place. Somewhere the light switch has 2 hot legs to it. The hot and neutral reversed in an outlet could be feeding the power to the switch through the light. This also could be caused by an open neutral someplace in the wiring. The most likely problem with all of these problems is not going to be easy to find without an on site inspection. Call a qualified professional electrician to do the work. When testing the system be certain everything is unplugged and you use an analog or solenoid type voltage tester on the switch. A digital meter will give a false voltage reading for power present in many instances.
