Engine light is on in 2002 Jetta. What might be causing this?

Answer:

some cars are built to have the light go on after a certain amount of time just so you take it into the shop. Usually you just need to hit a reset button (in the engine) and it goes off.
Impossible to tell. Take your car to an auto parts store, AutoZone, Advance, etc, and tell them your check engine light is on and ask them to scan it. They will do this for free. The code they give you can be checked in their computer system and you will have an idea of what is wrong. Before you do this, go out and check your gas cap. This is usually the most common reason the CEL comes on. Loosen it and retighten until it clicks.
a CEL won't go on for no reason, don't listen to that guy. take it to advanced auto or autozone and they will read it for free. there are way too many possible reasons for it to come on for us to list here.
