Question:

Every State Has/Had Nuclear Missile Silos?

My friend and I watched that nuclear war film THe Day After last night. He told me every U.S. state has nuclear missile silos or did during the Cold War.I have lived in every state on the Pacific Coast. I am not aware of nuclear missile silos in Oregon. Washington state had Operation Chrome Dome out of Fairchild AFB in Spokane. I do not know about California.BTW, I know there are many types of missiles that carry many types of warheads and not all of those missiles are fired from land or sea or air. Not all of the warheads are nuclear.

Answer:

i dont think all do either - i was raised in spokane - but i lived in the great state alaska 12 years - i know for a fact they have them up there - and i did here a story about a new mexico one that malfunctioned -
most silos are in the west, midwest northern states such as Montana...this gives them the trajectory to go over the poles and on target faster. I honestly don't believe his claim that they have been in every state...I do know however that we had secret bunkers in every state to ensure that the president of the united states had someplace close to always go in case of a nuclear strike.
Your friend is mistaken. He misunderstood the comments from the film. Every state once had some sort of facility that belonged to the Strategic Air Command, everything from ICBM silos to bomber bases to training facilities. For example, in my home State of Georgia we had bomber and fighter air bases, both active and standby, that were on 24-hour alert status to 24-hour manned navigation / radar sites that were used for bomber training flights. Tell your friend to stop being a putz and go back and watch the movie again.
No, not every state has had silos. Nearly all are in the central US. Far away from any attacker. SD, ND, WY, MT, KS are the most common locations,
most of the nuclear missiles are in Missouri, Arkansas and North Dakota
