Question:

Experimental Error?

Hi. I‘m writing an analysis for this lab. We did a lab on the chemical reaction between copper and sulfur in a closed test tube (covered with a rubber sheet). We used a alchol burner to heat the test tube and observed the chemical reaction that took place. Before the lab, we measured the mass of the test tube and its contents and after the chemical reaction, we measured the mass again to see if the mass changed. The results were that the change in mass was +0.30 grams, but is supposed to be +-0 grams because of the Conservation of Mass.I‘m having a hard time figuring out what one experimental error could be. Thanks for your help!

Answer:

I would assume that some air got in and the oxygen combined with some sulfur and copper and added to the weight. If the tube were truly sealed tight you would probably have blown out the seal as you heated the tube and contents, with the expansion as it heated up.
Unions differ depending on where in the country you are. You can make a very good living if you get into the right position. My welders make upwards of $3,000 to $5,000 a week easy. It's fun if you like doing stuff with your hands,n don't mind getting dirty and have good attention to detail. It is extremely dangerous. If you want to make the big bucks, your not going to do it mig welding. You need to get a combination of TIG, MIG, and stick.
