Where did people who worked with iron get the iron from to make chain and nails? And how do the workers get the iron out of the ore?
Iron ore is basically iron oxide,Fe2O3. Coke(coal,not the carbonated drink.:D) is used as a reducer to remove the oxygen. C+O2CO2 CO2+C2CO Fe2O3+3CO2Fe+3CO2 And now you have your iron,Fe without the oxygen!
The process is called smelting and is well documented in any text book but the last poster was correct.
