Fanning a fire.helpful, why not?

When there is a fire the ultimate decision is either water or if on a person a fire blanket.why is fanning not the right way to go?? What about fanning a fire creates the flames to increase?

fire burns oxygen. fanning it gives it more oxygen making it able to grow bigger. u can fight fire with fire thou if it is in a sealed environment by making more fire in there to get rid of more oxygen and stop it quicker
Fanning a flame increases the amount of oxygen that a fire has access to. The reason fires can be smothered is that they require oxygen to continue burning. If you fan a flame, it gives it more oxygen. Water isn't the best answer if the fire is a grease fire. The best is to smother the fire in a fire-retardant material or to use an extinguisher designed to smother the flame.
