Question:

Fiber One Bars; Lunch; Stomach Ache?

So, for breakfast, I've been eating those Fiber One bars, they taste good, and I like them(Oats and Chocolate!) But after a while, I start to get a little gassy.I know, TMISorry! They keep me full.so ya, the fiber, right? Why do they make me gassy? After lunch I have fifth period.I'm okay during thatSixth period, P.EYa, it sucks, when it's hot outside. But when I run and exercise, my stomach really starts hurtingIs the fiber contributing to the pain? And why is it hurting? Indigestion?

Answer:

Fiber is mostly indigestable and passes through your digestive tract without being absorbedThis is what makes you feel fuller and more satistied However, while fiber is not absorbed, it does get sort of digested in the intestines by the bacteria that naturally live in your colonThe action of your intestinal flora (bacteria) on fiber is what can cause gas and bloatingThis is uncomfortable and potentially embarassing, but seldom harmfulIf your diet was very low in fiber and you suddenly start eating a lot of fiber, you're going to have some discomfort and definately some gas and bloatingOver time, your body will adjust to the higher level of fiber and the symptoms will ease in their intensity If you eat several of these bars a day, you might want to cut back a bit and give your system a chance to adjustAnd be sure to drink plenty of fluid with ANY high fiber foodLots o'fiber + no fluids is a sure invitation to a gut ache!
