Question:

Firing clay question?

When you fire clay, do you actually put it in a fire inside of a special oven ( kiln)? If not, could you ever just put it in a fire ( like making a traditional pizza) and still have good results? Thanks!

Answer:

could you ever just put it in a fire? No, the fire does not get hot enoughWood firing of ceramics requires many many hours and lots of wood in a kiln carefully designed produce a powerful natural draft to burn the wood as rapidly as possible and thus as much heat as possible to raise the temperature as high as possible and then it is what is considered a low-fire kiln High fire uses fuel plus air in well designed burners.
