Question:

Anyone have information/advice for using fiberglass cloth and resin?

For a costume, I plan on making durable, hard hooves. Many people have suggested using fibercloss coated with polyester resin as a layer on top of foam that is coated with Plaster of Paris. So, I‘ve never used fiberglass coth or resin before, and I don‘t intend to use it except for this project.Where can I get it from? How much does it cost?I‘m sure I need goggles and gloves. A respirtory mask? Can I paint it?These questions sound dumb, but honestly I‘ve never heard of this stuff until it was suggested.

Answer:

Hobby Shop, like Hobby Lobby or Hardware Store. I do not know cost these days, but would expect about $2 per square foot. I do not think a simple mask will protect you from fumes. You may want to work in a well ventilated area. Yes, you can paint it, after it hardens. If the surface is too smooth for the paint to stick well, you can rough it up with sandpaper, or possibly use a special primer.
I always wanted to be a mechanic but only know the basic on cars and trucks, especially the older models.
yes you will need all the mentioned safety equipment. it is extremely messy and you will need to be in a well ventilated area preferably outdoors. my dad and i repaired a boat with the stuff once. i think we got it at a marina. it has been years though.
It will harden the foam without the cloth. When mixed, the resin gets real hot as it cures, hot enough to melt some types of foam. I would try it on an extra piece first and see if it works good.
