Question:

For cloth diapering Mommas. What is the difference in polyester and PUL?

My baby is apparently allergic to PUL and I want to know if the covers that I am using that say they are made with polyester is the same as PUL.Thanks for your help.

Answer:

polyester is completely different to PUL. Polyester is a type of fibre used to make fabric, PUL is a process used to make fabric waterproof. It stands for Poly Urethane Laminate. PUL can be done on ANY fabric, so you can have cotton PUL, polyester PUL, bamboo PUL. Unless otherwise specified, any PUL fabric used in covers will be polyester as polyester is 'naturally' (given it's a man made fabric!) water repellent so they use polyester to provide an additional layer of protection. If you can get cotton PUL it should be okay though, unless it is a synthetics allergy rather than just a polyester one. Check the fabric your friend is using to make the longies- a lot of people use polar fleece for this and polar fleece is made of polyester! Wool soakers might be your best bet, if you can use wool. I'm allergic to lanolin so I wasn't able to try them as you need lanolin to make them waterproof!
Yes, it would be the same thing unless you are using polyester fleece covers. You can tell its PUL because an obvious shiney laminate backing will be visible on the cover. If you are having PUl issues then give wool a trywool covers can be pricey but they are totally worth it!
