Question:

For copper sheet art work, what is it that is used to darken it ?

I have a roll of copper (not foil) that I will be pressing an impression into. I then want to blacken it. Then take steel wool and shine the raised impression. I have not done this in 25 years. At that time I was able to buy the whole kit. Copper sheet, tool and what I think was an acid wash. Am I mistaken about it being an acid wash ? I am wanting to do this for personalized christmas gifts and I am running out of time. I live in a small town and drove over 100 miles round trip today to hobby lobby and other art supply stores and they do not know what Im talking about. What is it that will blacken the copper sheets ? Help

Answer:

Liver of sulphur will do the trick!
Muriatic Acid which is just diluted Hydrochloric acid will start a patina on the copper. spray on as uniformly as possible. It wont be Black black as I recall it was more dark gray anyway you can get it at the hardware store, home depot, tile store (Eats grout, used for cleaning film off tiles after grout dries). Beware of vapors which will make you jump back. Work in a well ventilated area. Maybe multiple applications will make it darker. Experiment on a test piece. Should be cheap.
