Look under the back of the car. In a rear-wheel drive car, there will ALWAYS be a differential between the rear wheels. These are usually found in front-wheel drive cars, but are also found in mid-engined rear-drive cars, and in some sports cars (like the Corvette) for reasons of weight distribution (it puts the transmission nearer the rear of the car, counterbalancing the engine in front) All-wheel drive cars and 4WD cars and trucks also have differentials in the back, though. So this isn't a way to tell RWD from AWD/4WD. AWD cars also have a middle differential, but it isn't usually physically in the middle of the car, it's integrated into the transaxle. (They also have a front diff, same story) The way to spot AWD is that you have drive axles going to all four wheels. In a 2WD car, two of the wheels do not have drive axles running into the center of them. They're just sort of mounted onto the hub assembly.
