Question:

Giving my dad Power of Attorney?

I am leaving for boot camp and want to give my dad my power of attorney to pay my bills for me. I went to the library and they had 2 different forms, 1 was a General Durable Power of Attorney and 1 is a General Power of Attorney and the man said is is for military. Which of these should I use?

Answer:

Neither. You should give him a Limited Power of Attorney, with what specifically you want him to be able to handle and for how long. You can get a good one written up for free in the Army.
Your best bet would be to get a Special Power of Attorney that states that your dad is authorized access to your bank account for bill paying purposes. Honestly, many places will not accept a General Power of Attorney and will ask for a Special instead. It stems from people who had their stuff stolen by others who were given General POAs, who then tried to find the bank or business at fault because that's not what the POA was for!
