Question:

Glider chair for nursing?

how important is it to have a glider chair or rocking chair for nursing in? I have a horrible couch that kills everyones back when you sit in it. you sink straight down. it killed my back before i was pregnant.

Answer:

I was never very comfortable nursing in a glider rocker. The baby just didn't fit very well in my arms, with the arms of the chair getting in the way of my elbows. The one you have linked has padded arms that may help. Nursing in bed is nice, too - if you lay on your side, instead of sitting up. Nice way for both of you to get a little nap in :D If you've got room for it, I would look on craigslist or in a local thrift store see if you can get a comfy recliner. They even have rocking recliners, if you think the rocking would be nice.
I didn't have a glider chair. I had a Boppy pillow. That and a couple of other regular pillows did it for me. You won't really know how you or your baby likes to nurse until you actually do it. I would suggest holding off on spending the money on something like that until you know what you like. Agh, I just read that it's impossible to prop yourself up in bed comfortably. To be honest I really wanted a glider too when I was pregnant but I lived without it--then again, it was very comfortable for me and my daughter to nurse with me laying on my side. Maybe put aside the money and just wait and see (you may prefer to purchase a different kind of chair).
I personally think all babies require a rocking chair of some sort. And this glider chair looks very comfortable and I would think you would need a chair of comfort for those fussy, in the middle of the night, cries. Congratulations on your new baby and good luck!
It doesn't have to be a glider rocker, but it should be comfortable. You might want to buy a chair. I bought one at a used furniture store for $20. Keep in mind that you can nurse lying down in bed. Its much more comfortable than being propped up.
You don't necessarily have to buy a glider, but you will definitely want something comfortable to sit in, and if you can prop your feet up that will help you relax so that your milk can let down easier. We bought a glider at Toys-R-Us when we had our first baby, and I loved it. I would say that if you can afford the glider, go ahead and get it, you probably won't find yourself thinking, Boy, I wish I had never bought that thing! but you might find yourself wishing you had it for those late night feedings! As for the previous comment about nursing while lying down in bed, yes, you can do it, and it is more comfortable than being propped up, but if you choose to nurse your baby while lying in bed, PLEASE, PLEASE be careful! It is very easy to fall asleep and accidentally suffocate your baby. This happens more often than many people realize, it is a needless tragedy.
