good bench press starting point?

Im 134 pounds and am looking for a good weight to start lifting on the bench press , im pretty new to the gym scene and am lookin for an experinced persons opnion what weight should i start lifting on the bench press if i wanna gain mass and tone if im average strength for and weight 134 pounds?

I was benching 175 lbs at a bodyweight of 140 lbs when I last tried maxing out. Same Height As You. I don't do any real powerlifting, I'm more into Natural Bodybuilding. The only experience I had was doing pushups but I did them in a slow controlled fashion where I used no momentum and it made it extremely difficult for me to even push out 11 reps, this really breaks down the muscles a lot more than fast pushups and you will feel it the next day. If pushups aren't your thing then you can just work with what you can do on the bench, there are no bad starting points. When I train someone I always tell them I don't care if you do 3 reps or 300 reps, the only thing I'm looking for is good form and the pain in your face that tells me you're working hard.

why bench press, seriously, why bench press? if you are new and want to gain mass, the best exercise is the squat. but back to bench press, i think it is over rated. i understand the popularity of the bench press, but it is really necessary? instead of bench press, try pushups. if that's too easy, try pushups with your feet elevated on a chair. if that's too easy, try elevated pushups with a backpack on your back. you guessed it, the next step is to put weights or heavy books in your backpack. I just know that the progressively harder pushups will work you as well if not better than the bench press. but to your question, at 134lbs, you could put on 65lbs and do as many reps as you can. if you can do more than 10 reps, add 10lbs until you get to where you can only do about 10 reps. That's your start point. basically, pick a weight about half your bodyweight and trial/error to find your start point. good luck
Good Bench Press Weight
Since you're new to the gym scene, a good bench press goal would be to be able to bench your own body weight. This is convenient for you, since 135 lbs on a bench press is a 45 lb plate or a 35 lb plate, depending on the weight of the bar. But first, finding your bench press max, whatever you can succesfully press one time, is the first place to start. Then, you should do sets of 5 or 6, using about 80% or 85% of your max as a bench press workout. Make sure to mix it up a little though, so your muscles don't get used to one thing. Always push yourself so you can eventually increase the weight you use; you'll get more muscle in no time!
