Question:

Hardwood or engineered bamboo flooring. Which is better for 1st floor of house. House is built over a crawl-?

space and within 100 feet of a canal. Thanks

Answer:

100% engineered floor. The solid wood is not a good idea with the amount of moisture you likely have coming up from the crawlspace. Engineered is designed to withstand alot of the movement associated with solid wood, but it should still not be installed unless certain moisture and humidity ranges are met. Have a professional stab the subfloor with a moisture meter. If you are getting over 16%, then even engineered wood is probably not a great idea. If you proceed with the engineered wood, be sure to glue it down with a moisture cured urethane or you can trowel on a moisuture vapor barrier like Bostik MVP. Being 100 ft from the canal, you probably should stick with tile. Have a professional flooring company come out to give you an estimate and ask them to test the moisture in the subfloor. Then just check with different manufacturers to see if that fits within their recommended range.
hardwood and bamboo are both great floors, what you need to remeber as far as the hardwood that not all woods are hard, for example you wouldn't want a wood made out of pine because pine is a soft wood, when looking at the wood find out if it is soft or hard. The new bamboo they have is awesome. they have a new process were all the water is taken out of the bamboo and when it is put together it is a hard floor. so it's up to you and what you prefer. ask if it will scratch easy, with it being on the first floor it will get a lot of foot traffic and you want it to hold up.
Engineered flooring. It comes already sanded and sealed. It resists moisture and won't shrink or swell much. It's installed much like an unfinished floor, but takes some extra care to avoid scratching the surface
