Question:

Help! Burnt plastic on burner!?

I Just did the dumbest thing I think I have ever done. I removed a hot pan from the burner, and then spaced out and put a plastic lid on top of the hot burner! Any suggestions on getting the plastic off the burner now? Thank god I caught it so soon, and it didnt catch fire!

Answer:

wait until it completely hardens. I would sumerge the area with a heavy weat towel-dish towel with some soap......you should be able to pick it off once it is throughly wet.....if that doesn't work try putting ice on it and scrapping it off... GOOD LUCK!!
let it cool off completely and you will probably be able to chisel it off with a butter knife
Mr. sparkling Magic Erasers paintings wonders. I had an analogous ingredient take place and scraped it off with a razor blade and then have been given the rest off with Mr. sparkling Magic Erasers and a lot of muscle.... took some tries yet ultimately labored.
The good news is you didn't have a fire. The bad news is you are going to have a really tough time removing the plastic residue. It depends on the type of plastic, but assuming it is the usual type of softer plastic (such as Tupperware, etc.), these things are heck to remove. You may have to try to heat the burner again, until the plastic just begins to soften, and then use a putty knife to scrape the residue off. Then, when the element is cooler, use a wire brush such as you use on a barbecue grille to scrape the rest off. (DON'T breathe the fumes as the plastic melts ! ) You might also try to write or telephone the company which manufactured the plastic cover, and tell them (don't be embarrassed--you are not the first person to do this. Maybe they can suggest a chemical that can soften the plastic and make it easier to remove. But remember that many chemicals, such as acetone, are very flammible, so you don't want to use it on a hot or warm burner element. That's about the best I can suggest. Good luck.
Let the burner cool completely. Then try to lift the plastic off it. If it won't come off, warm up the burner slightly, then shut the heat off and try to lift up the plastic again. Sometimes, you can get all or a certain amount of the plastic off this way. You may have to turn the burner on high to burn off the rest. Keep wiping off the melted plastic with a wet cloth and it should be free of plastic after a few wipes. Watch out for fire; open the windows for this procedure.
