Question:

Help with ceiling fan wiring?

I'm trying to install a ceiling fan but I'm having trouble with the wiring. Coming out of the fan I've got a black, white, black and white striped, and a green wire. coming out of the cieling i've got a black, a white and a red wire. The fan's green wire is connected to the bracket as a ground, so that's out of the way. It's the other wires that confuse me. I've tried, white to white, black to black, and BW striped to red, but that didn't do anything.Any ideas? Thanks.

Answer:

The black and white striped is so you can turn the light and fan on separately. So at the fan hook white to white/black to black and striped to red. Then at switch box hook all white wires together with a wire nut, then a black power wire to both switches ,1 for fan 1 for light. Then the red wire coming from fan goes to a switch and the black wire coming from fan goes to a switch. If you want to run fan and light at the same time and just use pull string on fan then just hook black wire and striped wire together at the fan.
You would need a meter to check those wires coming out of the ceiling...usually 3 wire cable (black, red, and white) are used for a 3 way switch which can be turned on and off at 2 separate location (example:at both ends of a staircase)..If this is your situation, you will need only 2 wire cable (black and white) on a switch..you didn't mention whether you have a lighted fan or not..If so, the black w/white stripe would be for the light...just one more thing, make sure your room switch is on when testing it...
The wires on the fan; the white wire is the neutral, The black wire and the black/white wires are the hot wires on the fan, one goes to the fan and the other goes to the light. The wires in the ceiling; The white wire is the neutral, it gets connected to the white wire on the fan. Check the black wire and the red wire to see if they are both hot. If not, and the black wire is hot and the red wire isn't. the red wire feeds another circuit somewhere. If the wire feeds another circuit, tie the red, black wires in the ceiling together with the black and black/white wires from the fan. Is there an outlet or light not working somewhere? If they are both hot, connect one to the black wire and the other to the black/white wire. Is there a wall switch involved here? If so, when the wall switch is turned on, does it liven either the red or black wire? If this is the case, the wire that comes from the switch should be connected to which ever wire on the fan is the hot lead for the light. The other wire in the ceiling would be connected to the hot wire for the fan. There's lots of different scenarios that are possible. Be careful when with just hooking Black to Black or White to White as has been suggested. In some configurations the white wire is part of the switch leg and is not nuetral. Being that this is a 50 year old house, the Hot wire from the breaker box could very possibly be coming in at the light box instead of the switch box which would mean that there is a wire that is using both the Black and the White wires for power. One of them is taking power to the switch and the other is bringing power back to the light from the switch when the switch is turned on. In this scenario, the white wire would not be nuetral!!! The brown wire was typicallly used for hot up into the 70's and then they changed it to black. Your best bet is to hook it up exactly the way you took it off and hook the Blue and Black wire from your fan to the same wire. I assume that this fan has pull chain controls for both the light and the fan?.....
the black and red wire coming from you ceiling box indicates that there are two seperate voltage (hot) wires, one for the fan and one for the light, therefore you should have two seperate switches. fan-light. the striped wire goes to either the black or red and and the black from the fan to the other. once you make the connections make sure you pull the chain to turn the fan on, otherwise it still won't do nothing. good luck
