Question:

help with laying a floor?

Is it possible to lay the slot together fake wooden floor that you can buy in packs over carpet? Were in military housing so we can't change the carpets but would love some of that flooring in my room. Thanks

Answer:

The flooring you have explained sounds like laminate flooring that looks like real wood. If you were to lay it over carpet it would come apart unless it was a burber or very flat carpet. The compression capabilities of most carpets would allow the laminate to come apart. If it was a low pile burber it might work because lamintae flooring is a floating floor. It just depends on how much the carpet will move up and down letting the laminate floor become loose were it clicks together and disconnect.
you can't put anything over carpet, bc flooring has to have a flat, level surface. If you could rip the carpet out, you could put anything down. Your only alternative will be area rugs over that carpet. sorry
Probably not a good idea. There is a foam pad that goes under the floor. This is for sound dampening as well as insulation. It needs to be very flat to work. Carpeting will give you to many variances and will cause poor fit. Take the carpet you. You will be much happier.
ok my first thought to your question was no way! BUT, if you are desperate enough to have hardwood floors, you may be a able to do it like this: (since you can't pull the carpeting up) at lowes they sell this thin board for around $6 for a 4'X8' sheet (found on the same aisle as wall paneling). maybe if you lay this down over your carpet then lock in your laminate floor it may float above the carpet. i wouldn't suggest you leave much expansion room along the walls and you should attach a baseboard all they way around to help secure the laminate so maybe it won't pop up and come apart. i'm not saying it would work but if you have a small room like 10X12 or so to try it out in first, that way if it doesn't work out you may have only lost a couple hundred dollars. good luck to you....
