Question:

hi i am wondering what the most i should pay for used motorcycle tires is?

i have a 2006 gsxr 600 and need tires bad. i found a pair of used michelin pilot power tires for $40 for front and rear tire.they have about %60 tread left on them. is it worth the purchase or should i buy new ones for like $300?

Answer:

I have only re-used one tire - ever. It was my own, installed by me and ran for only about 300 miles. Used hard parts are fine. Used wear parts are a no-no. The price tells me one thing - he's selling them so he doesn't have to pay to trash them (minimum $5 each plus transport to the dump - in a rural settingpossibly more difficult in the city)
A pair of tires for $40? That is like 80% off. I would be highly skeptical that something is wrong with them. On a car? Sure, why not. If a tire blows, gets damaged, whatever else, worst case scenario is it pops and you slowly pull over to the side. On a motorcycle if your tire goes? Yeah, you have fun with that. I wouldn't ever get used tires, it just isn't worth it.
New is preferred, used that is better than what you have now is done as needed and budget allows. Usable takeoffs common at tire shops when somebody gets new sets at start of season- especially for front tires that have half tread left when rear is bald. I've run a couple used tires over the years and have helped others with used tires replace blown tires to get home- and they have run couple months with them. May as well get the used tires and run them this season- just be careful and when you can afford new for next year get them
