Question:

How are ceramic products (plates, bowls, etc.) mass produced?

I was looking at my ceramic plates and such and i became very curious about how it was made. I take a ceramics class so I am aware of how to make plates and bowls on the wheel, but i was just wondering if they are made through machines or something when they have to mass produce them. i just can‘t picture thousands of people sitting in a room full of ceramic wheels, just making plates all day. If anyone actually knows, I‘d be very interested to find out :].

Answer:

They are molded from pressed clay or slip cast and dipped for the bisque glaze. The decorations are decals where the pigment is ceramic glaze/enamel rather than ink like most decals So a batch of decals are printed up from prepared plates and each plate as one or more decals is placed and the plates are refired to a fairly low temp (about 1100F) to set the glaze. If is also possible, if the shape is right, to apply decoration with silk screen processes - the mugs people give out at conventions NFB Orlando 2011 Pride Looks Out are done on already prepared mugs and fired for permanency
