Question:

How can I deactive my car alarm or turn off the horn?

2000 4-runner with 250k miles. Every once in awhile my alarm goes off at random. I‘m sure there is wire or other damage, but at this point I don‘t want to put money into it? When the alarm goes off it doesn‘t affect anything other than the noise. As soon as I put the key in the alarm shuts off and runs fine. If I‘m not home though it drives my neighbors NUTSobviously. Can i disable the alarm altogether or at least the sound??? I‘m not worried about it being stolen (knock on wood). Thanks!

Answer:

Can you locate the horn and unplug it? Then you may have the lights that still blink. How about disconnecting the battery? Until you get it figured out or need to use the car,
It all depends if it is a factory or aftermarket alarm. Factory alarms can usually be disarmed by turning the key in the drivers side door. But factory alarms are much more complicated when it comes to false triggering. On the other hand, aftermarket alarms are pretty easy to completely disable. They are installed under your dash and you could probably see it if you get down on your floor and look up there. If you can unplug the main wire harness, everything should stop for good. If you can't find the harness or the alarm, look for an override button. usually mounted on the lower side of your dash panel by your knees. Most alarms can be put in valet mode (turned off) by turning your ignition on and holding the button for 5 seconds. Also, is it a siren or a the horn honking? If it is a siren, you can open your hood and look for it. They are typically mounted somewhere near the firewall where there is a flat metal mounting spot they can be screwed into. If you can find that, cut the wires. Just make sure they wont hang down near your belts or anything they can tangle with. If it is the horn making the noise, you will have to stick to locating the alarm (assuming you couldn't just put it in valet mode). You could pull the fuse like Michael said but many times there is another important function you will lose along with the horn when you pull the fuse. Plus, you need your horn to pass inspection. If this doesn't end up being helpful, you can post why and I can try to help further.
